Why Is My Phone So Hot? When Overheating Is Normal vs a Real Problem

A warm phone during a video call is normal. A scorching phone while idle is not. Here is how to tell the difference.

Every smartphone generates heat. The processor, modem, display and battery all produce warmth during normal use, and that heat dissipates through the metal frame and glass back. But there is a big difference between a phone that gets warm during a FaceTime call and a phone that is uncomfortably hot while sitting on a table.

Normal warmth: Video calls, GPS navigation, gaming, fast charging, restoring from backup, downloading large updates and using the camera for extended periods all generate noticeable heat. If your phone gets warm during these activities and cools down afterward, that is completely normal. The processor is working hard and the heat is a byproduct.

Abnormal overheating: If your phone is hot while idle, hot in your pocket with the screen off, or hot enough that you get a temperature warning, something is wrong. Common causes include a degraded or swollen battery, a rogue app running constantly in the background, a software bug after an update, or physical damage to the battery or board.

Battery problems are the most common hardware cause. A lithium-ion battery that has degraded past its useful life can generate excess heat during charging and discharging. In severe cases the battery swells, putting pressure on the screen and back glass. If your phone feels unusually thick, has a bulging screen or the back glass is lifting, stop using it immediately — swollen batteries are a fire hazard.

Liquid damage can cause delayed overheating. A phone that got wet months ago may develop corrosion on power management components over time. This corrosion creates partial short circuits that generate heat. The phone may have seemed fine after drying out, but the internal damage was progressing.

Software troubleshooting first. Before assuming hardware, try these steps: restart the phone, check for app updates, look at battery usage in settings to see if one app is using an abnormal amount of power, and reset settings (not a full factory reset) if a recent update caused the issue.

If software steps do not help and the phone continues to overheat, it is time for professional diagnostics. JWS checks battery health, inspects the board for damage and tests charging behavior to identify the root cause. Visit the iPhone repair or Samsung repair page, or book an appointment.
