What to Do Before Dropping Off Your Device for Repair

Whether you are dropping off a phone, laptop, tablet or game console for repair, a few minutes of preparation can save time, protect your data and make the whole experience smoother. Here is what to do before your repair appointment.

Back up your data. For phones: use iCloud (iPhone) or Google Backup (Android) to save your photos, contacts, messages and app data. For laptops: back up important files to an external drive or cloud storage. Most repairs do not touch your data, but board-level work and liquid damage repairs carry some risk. Better safe than sorry.

Disable Find My / Activation Lock. If you are leaving a phone or tablet for repair, consider temporarily disabling Find My iPhone or Find My Device. Some repairs require a factory reset or component testing that can trigger activation lock. Your repair technician will let you know if this step is needed.

Remove your case and screen protector. Take off your phone case, pop socket and any removable accessories before drop-off. The repair shop needs to access the device internals and these items can get in the way or get damaged during disassembly. Keep them with you so nothing gets lost.

Write down your passcode (if needed). Some repairs require the technician to test the phone after reassembly — checking touch response, cameras, speakers, Face ID and charging. If the device has a passcode, you may be asked to provide it or unlock the phone before pickup. JWS never stores or records passcodes.

For consoles: Remove any game discs, unplug USB storage drives and take photos of your cable setup so you can reconnect everything easily at home. You do not need to bring controllers, power cables or HDMI cables unless the repair shop specifically asks for them.
