5 Signs Your PS5 or Xbox HDMI Port Is Going Bad

An HDMI port rarely dies without warning. Most of the time it gives you clues for days or weeks before it stops working completely. Catching these signs early means you can get it repaired on your schedule instead of being suddenly cut off mid-game. Here are five signs your PS5 or Xbox HDMI port is going bad.

1. The picture flickers or cuts out. If your screen randomly goes black for a second, flickers, or drops signal during play, the HDMI connection is becoming unstable. Loosening solder joints or slightly bent pins make intermittent contact — it still works most of the time, but not reliably. This is often the earliest warning sign.

2. Video only works when you hold the cable a certain way. If you've found yourself propping up the cable, pushing it in harder, or angling it to get a picture, the port is failing. A healthy port holds a solid connection no matter how the cable sits. Needing to "find the sweet spot" means the internal contacts are damaged.

3. The port feels loose or wobbly. Gently check whether the HDMI cable feels snug. If the connector wiggles easily, the port feels loose in its housing, or it looks pushed into the console, the port is physically damaged and getting worse with each use.

4. You can see bent or misaligned pins. Shine a flashlight into the port. The tiny pins inside should be straight and evenly spaced. If any look bent, pushed over, or bridged together, that's direct physical damage — and continuing to plug in cables can make it worse or damage the board.

5. No signal after moving the console. If the picture disappears right after you moved, cleaned around, or bumped the console, that's a classic sign the port took stress and a connection broke. This often happens when the cable was left plugged in during the move.

Why acting early matters. A port with a loose connection can be repaired cleanly. But if you keep forcing cables into a failing port, you risk tearing pads off the board or damaging nearby chips — turning a simple port replacement into a bigger board-level repair.
