PS5 Fan Loud? Causes of a Noisy PS5 and How to Fix It

If your PS5 has gotten noticeably louder over time — sounding like a jet engine during demanding games — its trying to tell you something. A loud fan means the cooling system is ramping up to fight rising internal temperatures, and theres usually a clear, fixable cause behind it.

Dust buildup is the number one cause. The PS5 pulls a lot of air through its cooling system, and over months of use that air carries dust into the heatsink fins and fan blades. As dust accumulates, airflow drops, the console runs hotter, and the fan spins faster and louder to compensate. A professional cleaning of the fan, vents and heatsink restores airflow and dramatically reduces noise. This is the single most effective fix for a loud PS5.

Thermal paste and liquid metal. The PS5 uses liquid metal between the main chip (APU) and the heatsink to transfer heat. Over time this can shift or degrade, reducing cooling efficiency and causing the fan to work harder. Reapplying thermal compound is a more advanced service that can help consoles running hot even after cleaning. This should only be done by someone experienced, as liquid metal is conductive and can damage the board if applied incorrectly.

Placement and ventilation. Before assuming the worst, make sure your PS5 has room to breathe. It needs several inches of clearance around the vents and should not be enclosed in a tight cabinet. Placing it in open air, away from heat sources and off carpet, can reduce fan noise on its own. But if its already dusty inside, only a cleaning will fix it.

When fan noise signals something more. A grinding or rattling noise (as opposed to a smooth whir) can mean the fan bearing itself is failing and the fan needs replacement. And if your console is overheating and shutting down despite a clean fan, theres a deeper cooling issue worth diagnosing before it causes damage to the chip.
