Phone Screen Repair vs Buying a New Phone: The Real Cost Breakdown
A cracked screen triggers the "should I just get a new phone" debate. Here is the math — and why repair almost always wins.

When your phone screen cracks, the first thought is usually: "Is it even worth fixing?" The carrier store wants to sell you a new phone (with a new 2-year payment plan). But the math almost always favors repair — and it is not even close.
The real cost of a new phone. An iPhone 16 starts at $799. A Galaxy S25 starts at $799. Most people finance these over 24–36 months, paying $25–$35/month. That feels manageable until you realize you are spending $800+ over the contract. And your old phone — even with a cracked screen — is worth trade-in value that you lose if you just toss it in a drawer.
The cost of screen repair. A quality iPhone screen repair ranges from $80 to $250 depending on the model. Samsung repairs range from $80 to $300. That is 10–30% of the cost of a new phone. The repair takes 30–90 minutes, you keep all your data and settings, and your phone is fully functional again.
When repair does not make sense. If the phone is 4–5+ years old, has multiple failing components (bad battery, broken charging port AND a cracked screen), or the repair cost exceeds 50% of the phone's current value, upgrading may be the better move. JWS evaluates the full device and gives an honest recommendation — if repair does not make sense, you will hear that before paying anything.
The environmental cost. Manufacturing a new smartphone generates roughly 70 kg of CO2 emissions. Repairing a cracked screen generates essentially zero additional environmental impact. If sustainability matters to you, repair is the clear winner.
