Laptop Screen Cracked or Dark? When Replacement Makes Sense

A laptop with a cracked, flickering or completely black screen is frustrating, but the screen is often the only thing wrong with the machine. If the laptop still boots (you can hear the startup sound or connect it to an external monitor), the motherboard, storage and RAM are fine — you just need a new display panel.

Laptop screen replacement involves removing the bezel around the screen, unscrewing the damaged panel, disconnecting the video cable, and installing a replacement. For most laptops, this takes 30 to 60 minutes. The key is sourcing the correct panel — laptops use specific screen sizes, resolutions, connector types and mounting configurations that must match exactly.

Cost depends on the laptop model and screen type. Standard 15.6-inch IPS panels for common brands like HP, Dell, Lenovo and Acer are widely available and reasonably priced. Touchscreen displays, high-resolution 4K panels and OLED screens cost more because the technology and replacement parts are more expensive.

A few things to watch for: if the laptop screen flickers or goes dark but comes back when you adjust the hinge angle, the issue might be a damaged video cable rather than the panel itself. Cable replacement is simpler and cheaper. If the screen shows vertical or horizontal lines only in certain areas, the LCD panel is cracked internally even if the outer glass looks intact.
