Laptop Running Slow? When to Repair, Upgrade or Replace
A slow laptop is not always broken. Sometimes a simple upgrade or cleanup brings it back to life.
A laptop that takes forever to boot, freezes during basic tasks or struggles with multiple browser tabs is not necessarily dying. In many cases the fix is simpler and cheaper than buying a new machine.
The most common cause of a slow laptop is still running on an old hard drive (HDD) instead of a solid-state drive (SSD). Upgrading from an HDD to an SSD is the single biggest performance improvement you can make — boot times drop from minutes to seconds, and everything feels noticeably faster. JWS can clone your existing drive to the new SSD so you keep all your files and programs.
Low RAM is the second most common issue. If your laptop has 4GB of RAM, upgrading to 8GB or 16GB lets it handle more tasks without freezing. Not all laptops have upgradable RAM (some newer models have it soldered to the board), so JWS checks compatibility before recommending an upgrade.
Overheating also causes slowdowns. Dust buildup inside the fan and heatsink forces the CPU to throttle its speed to avoid damage. A thorough internal cleaning and fresh thermal paste can restore normal performance on laptops that are running hot and loud.
If the laptop is more than 7–8 years old, has a failing motherboard or the cost of repairs exceeds 60% of a comparable replacement, JWS will be upfront about recommending a new device instead. Visit the computer repair page or book an appointment for a diagnostic.
