iPhone Back Glass Repair: Options, Cost and What to Know

iPhone back glass repair is tricky because Apple designed it to be difficult to replace. Here are your options and what each one costs.

Starting with the iPhone 8, Apple introduced glass backs on iPhones for wireless charging. The problem: that glass cracks just as easily as the front — sometimes easier because most cases leave the camera bump area exposed. And unlike front screen repairs, back glass replacement is not a simple swap.

Why back glass repair is complicated. Apple glues the back glass to the frame with extremely strong adhesive. On iPhone 8 through iPhone 13, the glass is essentially fused to the chassis. Removing it without damaging internal components requires either a laser machine (which precisely separates the glass from the frame) or careful manual removal with controlled heat and tools. The laser method produces the cleanest results.

Cost comparison. Apple charges a flat out-of-warranty rate for back glass that often exceeds $150–$200+ depending on the model — and for iPhone 12 and newer, Apple may quote it as a "whole unit replacement" at $350+. Third-party repair shops with laser machines can typically replace the back glass for significantly less while preserving the original phone.

Does cracked back glass matter? Beyond the cosmetic issue, cracked back glass creates real problems. Sharp edges can cut your fingers and catch on pockets. More importantly, the cracks compromise the phone's water resistance seal, allowing moisture and dust to reach internal components. If you use your phone outdoors, near water or in humid conditions, cracked back glass is a ticking time bomb for corrosion damage.

Wireless charging impact. Minor cracks usually do not affect wireless charging, but severe shattering or missing glass fragments can. If your phone has stopped wireless charging after back glass damage, it may have also damaged the wireless charging coil underneath.
