First Time Mailing a Device for Repair? A Complete Guide

Sending your phone, console or laptop by mail for repair can feel risky. Here is exactly how the process works, step by step.

If there is no good repair shop nearby, mail-in repair is a great option — but sending an expensive device through the mail can feel nerve-wracking the first time. Understanding the process takes most of the stress out of it.

Step 1: Submit the mail-in form. Start by filling out the mail-in repair form on the JWS website. Describe the device, the problem and your contact information. This gives the shop a heads-up that your package is coming and what to look for when it arrives.

Step 2: Pack your device carefully. Use a box at least 3 inches larger than your device on every side. Wrap the device in anti-static bubble wrap and fill empty space with packing paper, foam or crumpled newspaper so nothing shifts during transit. Do not include chargers, cables or accessories unless the shop specifically asks for them. Print a copy of your mail-in form confirmation and place it inside the box.

Step 3: Choose a shipping carrier with tracking. USPS Priority Mail, UPS Ground and FedEx Home Delivery all work well. Always use a service with tracking so you can confirm delivery. Consider adding insurance for the declared value of the device — especially for consoles and laptops worth hundreds of dollars. The cost of insurance is tiny compared to the value of the device.

Step 4: Wait for diagnosis. After your device arrives, JWS inspects it and contacts you with a diagnosis, repair options and a price quote. This usually happens within 1–2 business days of arrival. You will receive photos of the issue when relevant — like a close-up of a damaged HDMI port or a corroded board section — so you can see exactly what the technician sees.

Step 5: Approve or decline. You decide whether to proceed. If you approve, the repair begins and is typically completed within 1–3 business days depending on complexity. If you decline, the device is returned to you with no repair charge. There is no pressure and no obligation.

Step 6: Free return shipping. When you approve the repair, JWS includes free return shipping. Your device is packed securely, shipped with tracking, and usually arrives back to you within 2–3 business days. The full round-trip experience — from mailing your device to getting it back repaired — typically takes about one week.

Tips from experience: Remove SIM cards and memory cards before shipping. Take a few photos of your device's condition before packing as a record. Disable Find My iPhone or device locks only if the repair shop requests it. Do not ship lithium batteries outside of a device (loose batteries are restricted by carriers).
