Computer Won't Turn On? Common Causes and What to Do
A computer that will not power on can be a simple fix or a sign of something serious. Here is how to narrow it down.
A computer that will not turn on is one of the most common repair requests, and the cause can range from a dead battery to a fried motherboard. Before panicking, there are a few things worth checking.
For laptops: check the charger first. A dead battery with a faulty charger is the most common reason a laptop will not power on. Try a different charger if you have one available, or check that the charging light comes on when plugged in. If the charger LED is off, the charger itself may be dead. If the laptop shows no signs of life with a known-good charger, the problem is internal.
For desktops: check the power supply. Desktop computers have a separate power supply unit (PSU) that can fail silently. If pressing the power button does nothing — no fans, no lights, no beeps — the PSU is the first suspect. A PSU tester or a known-good replacement confirms this quickly. JWS tests the PSU before recommending motherboard-level repair.
RAM and component seating. Sometimes a computer that recently stopped working just needs to be reseated. RAM sticks, graphics cards and even the CMOS battery can work loose over time, especially in desktops that get moved or bumped. Removing and reseating these components fixes the issue more often than people expect.
Liquid damage and surge damage. If the computer stopped working after a spill, storm or power surge, board-level damage is likely. Liquid damage requires thorough cleaning and inspection under magnification. Surge damage can blow capacitors, fuses or voltage regulators on the motherboard. Both are repairable with micro-soldering if the damage is localized.
When it is the motherboard. If basic troubleshooting rules out the charger, battery, PSU and RAM, the issue is likely on the motherboard itself — a failed power IC, blown fuse or corroded trace. JWS performs board-level diagnostics to identify the exact failure point before recommending repair or replacement.
